The GOP Translator

5.August.15

The media’s been all over Donald Trump lately for saying every crazy thing that pops into his head—that immigrants are rapists and thieves, that laziness is a trait of the blacks, that President Obama’s birth certificate is fake—and he never misses an opportunity to remind anyone who will listen about his most important traits—namely that he’s “really rich” and that “beautiful women love [him].”

Perhaps the one good thing about Trump is that he needs no translation. He is up front about who he is—an egomaniac with a strong tendency toward racism and sexism—and what he stands for, which includes an honest plan to put corporations and billionaires first in our economy.

It’s the other nine Republican candidates at Thursday’s presidential debate that we will need to focus on. Though these candidates may use a bit more tact, they often have similar underlying messages that undervalue working families.

Luckily for you, we’ve put together a translator of common talking points and soundbites from past speeches that you can anticipate hearing again on Thursday. As you probably already know, what they say isn’t always what they mean, and we’re here to help you break it down.
