In February, the President released his budget proposal, proving once again that this administration has the wrong priorities and is more concerned with giving tax breaks to the rich than providing hard-working families with the supports they need to make ends meet. Under Bush’s proposed budget $1.6 trillion in tax cuts would go to the wealthy, but:
- 300,000 children would lose child care assistance;
- 200,000-300,000 people would lose their food stamp benefits;
- 25,000 children would lose access to Head Start and Early Head Start; and
- Countless other programs would face cuts (to read more, click here).
Leaders in the House and Senate now have to develop a Congressional budget that will be debated and voted on in the coming weeks. So, your elected representatives in Washington have a choice. They can follow the President’s lead and force drastic cuts to domestic programs to pay for tax breaks to the rich; or they can choose real fiscal responsibility and invest in the programs the will help families succeed and contribute to their communities.
