The short explanation of this alert was:
On Thursday, December 8, 2005 the House Judiciary Committee passed Chairman
Sensenbrenner's anti-immigrant bill, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism,
and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (HR 4437). Extreme provisions
buried in the bill go beyond targeting immigrants here illegally to targeting
legal immigrants, citizens, and those applying for citizenship.
The bill strikes at civil liberties by taking away basic rights like a day
in court and a meaningful defense. The employment verification and border security
provisions are unrealistic and overly aggressive and would do more harm than
